Hello world!

March 28, 2010 - One Response

Welcome to munchesandcrunches! This is my first post on my brand new site, never in my life did I think I would have my own website. After about a year of reading blogs daily and posting on my old one sometimes. I think I have decided on the direction I really want to go with this. I want to focus on my motto of trying one new thing everyday. I am going to document it here along with taking lots of pictures so I will have the memories to look back on, and updating my eating and workout goals. I would also like to start writing for other blogs and online publications about health and fitness since I have all of the tools at my fingertips.

I hope you all enjoy reading!

Get out and try something new today.

another quarter’s end

March 18, 2010 - Comments Off on another quarter’s end

This quarter of college was much better than last! I met some new friends, still kept my grades up, had fun with Dan and worked out pretty damn hard!

I started the quarter off with an intramural volleyball game, I was the captain and didn’t know how to play, but we actually made it to the playoffs and NOT in the loser’s bracket :-) Our team is in the first bracket, top left: Gold-Diggers! We actually beat the #1 team in the first match, lost the second match by a couple points and lost the final match by ONE POINT…ahhhh it was so very intense. It was a fun season!

I have also made a few more friends/acquaintances in my public health major. Too bad a few of them are seniors, but there are plenty who are juniors as well. One of the best things of this quarter was finding out that a guy friend of mine from back home has a sister who goes here! Lindsay was on my v-ball team and we became bachelor buddies! We have been hanging out a few times a week and it makes me happy :-) I feel like I am in 3rd grade talking about making new friends, but I guess that’s what happens when you go off to college.

Winter quarter I was also inducted into Eta Sigma Gamma, which is the honor society for the public health major, you have to maintain a certain GPA (forget the number), take part in the club meetings and have taken a certain amount of health classes. I got a pin, a diploma thing, we had a candle lighting ceremony, and a potluck. It was very interesting, I never expected to do anything like that but I am so glad I did, it will look great on a resume’ and I love going to the meetings and having an impact on the school.

As I mentioned above, I spent winter quarter working out a lot more than I did fall quarter which is good! I am much more positive and working on losing this weight I have gained since I quit my full time serving job (on my feet all day). I have been doing a lot of weight training, spinning and yoga classes. I am still planning on getting my personal training certificate I talked about on another post. I am not able to do it through the school though so I need to research the best company to go through. ANY ADVICE???

Oh ya and I am still planning on running the SEATTLE ROCK n’ ROLL I will be running the half and have been putting my running off all quarter until the last month. I am able to run 10 minutes with no stopping and that is so very sad considering 7 months ago I could run 10 miles without stopping. Slowly, but surly I am building my mileage back up. I ran just over 3 miles today in 36 minutes and my body is achin’!! My goal was to PR, but at this point i am not doing any speed training, and am not sure if I even will since I have to build all of my miles back up before I even start to think about that. One nice thing is that when I am running (my 3 miles in 36 minutes included some walking breaks) my pace is right at what it was this time last year so that is encouraging. Tomorrow will be a spin day, then Sat and Sun I plan on doing 3 miles again, both days.

Well, this is long enough for now! I have had much more fun this quarter than last and I’m pretty confident it is only going to go up from here! I am finishing my last final around 1pm tomorrow then I am bookin’ it out of town to watch Dan play in a softball game back home, and just relax and catch up with friends, and hopefully get some hours at work, for a week! YAY IM STOKED!

Things I am looking forward to:

-San Diego, CA in 2 weeks

-Mariners v. A’s opening day on 4-12!!!!

-Intramural softball

-Half mary

-flip flops, sun, dresses and everything else that comes with amazing weather

-Dan’s graduation

Oh, one last thing! I gave up sugar….if you know me, this is HUGE HUGE HUGE! I am letting myself have things with added sugar in moderation, not going above 25-30 g per day. I have been averaging about 5-10 g of added sugar mostly in the form of bread (weird…) and granola. I feel amazing!!!! It feels so good to be getting off the sugar addition. You are only supposed to have about 25-30g/day for my calorie range and I was averaging about 20 just before lunch time! I am having a great time reading labels again for ingredients! I have also lost 1 pound, only 29 more to go.

Happy Valentines Day!

February 14, 2010 - One Response

Happy Feb 14th! It Valentines Day! I actually really like this holiday, I feel it is a good day to make an effort and tell everyone you love them. We don’t do that enough the rest of the year so it is a simple reminder of how lucky we all are to have good people in our lives who care for and love us.

My plans for the day include:

  • some breakfast that D will make (egg whites, turkey bacon, hashbrowns, and a fruit)
  • a weight and cardio gym workout
  • decorating my sugar cookies
  • driving to the nearest city (about 45 mins away) to run a couple errands and make out 7:45 dinner reservations!

Who/what do you love??

might as well have some fun while i'm here

January 24, 2010 - Comments Off on might as well have some fun while i'm here

This has been a good week. I started it off by driving back to the ‘burg (where I attend college) and playing my first intramural volleyball game. I am the captain of our team and I don’t really know how to play but I had a lot of fun being out there trying to get the ball over the net. I brushed up on my skills, or lack there of, beforehand with my teammates. We lost all 3 matches, but the 2nd one was close. Hopefully we will do better in a couple days when we play again. The rest of the week I just went to classes and have come to the conclusion that this quarter is going to be much harder than last. I am still planning on pulling good grades but I will need to put some effort into it. I have my first 2 tests this week so I will be studying up for those!

The rest of the week I just hung out at the gym and at home, as of right now I have worked out 6 hours and still have all day tomorrow to get a workout in, I’m going to hit the weights and do more speed training for my half. My goal was 7 hours of workouts and I have a good guess I will hit it! YAY, I really have no excuse since I don’t work during the week and sit on my butt in classes all day. If anyone has any good free weight suggestions please send them my way! nikinrealtimeblog@gmail.com. I am getting a little bored with mine.

I was very excited for this weekend because it is the first weekend I have had no plans for and that I had off in TWO MONTHS! I was ready to just chill out.

We started off the weekend by having a little date night, I made some pizza and salads and we went and saw “The Book of Eli”

At first, I didn’t want to see this movie but D did so I went with it, I was very happy we saw this one. I highly recommend it. It was intense and it made me think, I actually want to see it again because there is a twist at the end that I want to get figured out.

This morning I woke up and made waffles, got caught up on some tv (real housewives of the OC…makes me wanna move to cali even more) went to fred meyer for a vacuum, then worked out at the gym…30 mins on the spin bike, 15 speed training on the track and 15 on the elip and i was ready to peace out. I got home showed, cleaned up and got ready to meet up with some friends. My boyfriend and I met up with our friends Chaz and Evan and then Evan’s friend Randall at a bar across the street from our house for some dinner and beers (dinner for me and the bf, beer for everyone else) I had a chicken taco salad with some cheese, tomatoes, onions, jalps and I think that is it. I had guac/s. cream/salsa on the side. it was actually very good! Chain restaurant food never really excites me anymore but I would order this again.

After that, D and I went to watch our bball team host our in state rivals. It was the first game of anything at my school I have been to and it was a lot of fun, it was a good game to watch because the scoring was pretty close most of the game. We ended up losing, but to a nationally ranked team, thats a-ok in my book.

Now I am just chillin with the kitty and maybe doing some more homework before I crash. I hope everyone is having a very good weekend!

who said running was free??

January 19, 2010 - 2 Responses

I have heard this mentioned in so many fitness and health magazines, but I wonder who actually came up with that? Because boyyyyy were they so very wrong!

Shoes: 60$ on sale

Garmin: 100-400$

Clothing: 200-300$(and that is shopping at Ross and Nords Rack)

Race fees: 300$

And that was just in 5 short months of last year, but you know what I belive it is worth it, the gear I buy lasts for a really long time and attributes to a high you can not get anywhere else. I really do love running, sometimes you have bad runs but most of the time they are amazing. I feel like I talk about running a lot, sometimes too much but it is a huge part of my life.

Last night I paid the 92$ to run the Seattle Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon in 5 short months! I am way excited because this was supossed to be my very first half last year but it sold out so I chose a different one. I did get to experience it a little bit though because I went and supported a friend.

Heres to another fantastic HALF! My goal is 2hrs 30mins or less….thats 14 mins faster than my last one, can i do it? I will try my hardest to increase my pace

Hey guys, it seems i have missed out on the blog world for quite some time, just posting….im still reading. I think about contributing to my site every couple weeks but then decide there is no point because noone reads it, but I think writing down my thoughts and what is going on in my life is good. I can see where I was and how I felt about certain things and I can relieve some stress maybe.

The past couple months have been very trying, but I have made it though and I am happy to be going in the right direction.

I completed my first quarter in a university with a 3.78 GPA!

I spent a month at home with my friends and family

I made money singing the birthday song back at my old job

I baked a lot of treats

And pretty much just relaxed with the people I love the most. I did some reflecting on my first quarter away at school and have decided to make the rest of the year worthwhile!

2010 GOALS

I dont really like making new years resoulutions since i make daily goals for myself anyway…but here are some things i would like to accomplish in the next year

*lose 25 pounds

*learn to rock climb

*play an intramual sport for the school

*maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA

*become an ACE certified personal trainer

*run another half marathon

*find an on-campus job relating to my major (Public Health/Community Education) or my minor (Nutrition)

*work on my relationship with the bf

*take more pictures

There you have it, those are just some things that I can think of right now that I would like to accomplish within the next year.

Don’t let life roll past you, jump on and enjoy the everyday things!!

going to GUAM!

November 5, 2009 - 2 Responses

…..maybe. I have known about this opportunity for a few days now and am just on the fence about whether or not I should shell out the money for the 2 week trip.

Here are the stats:

  1. cost of trip=$2,300(most meals, sleeping in the U of Guam dorms, tuition and most excursions are included)
  2. cost of airfare=$1,400
  3. cost of spending money=$500
  4. 2 week trip gives you 7 credits that I will need to pay for at some point anyway
  5. i would be working with children ages 5-15 teaching them about nutrition and physical activity in a classroom setting and in a gym/school PE setting, plus since I am a public health major I would get to work with Guam’s PH dept a little bit
  6. financial aid will cover some of this, in the process of learning how much
  7. a gallon of milk in Guam costs $10!
  8. the beaches and scenery are GORGEOUS!

Have or did any of you study abroad in college? or REGRET not doing it?

LET ME KNOW YOUR EXPERIENCES!

I told my prof I am about 80% sure I want to do it, its just so expensive, but I feel it will look great on a resume and my career goal is to work with children so it is right up my alley.

In other news…..I hope Megan and Caitlin are recovering well from their 18 mile run! Thats awesome I cant wait to read your posts about it.

Allison is having a giveaway for  Zevia All Natural Soda

Lynn is having a Chobani giveaway

IN goal news: I read over 100 pages in a new book yesterday, only 300 more to go, D and I also signed up for the $100/month on grocery challenge to save some money, i have tried 1 new recipe(tuna burgers!) and I plan to do a yoga sessh this weekend. Susan and I are doing a Sunday accountability check in on monthly goals so post how your doing on yours.

Have a wonderful Thursday, I will leave you with some pictures of Guam
